The aftermarket for crate engines is expansive, but some people prefer to stick with OE performance. There are few crate engines out there that Chevrolet Performance has signed off on, one being the amazing ZZ6 Turn-Key crate engine. This engine has been designed, engineered, and tested by Chevrolet. In this video, Chevrolet’s Special Programs Manager, Bill Martens, gives us the rundown on the ZZ6 engine.

The ZZ6 Turn-Key crate engine is one of the most powerful crate engines in the 25+ years of the ZZ-crate engine lineup. It’s equipped with aluminum fast-burn cylinder heads, and has LS-style beehive valvesprings for better high-rpm performance. It’s rated at making 405 horsepower, and 406 lbs.-ft. of torque. Bill explains that this is more power than any production engine offered in any Chevy muscle car.

The foundation of the ZZ6 is a cast-iron block with 4-bolt mains. It has a forged steel crankshaft, an aggressive hydraulic roller camshaft, and durable hypereutectic aluminum pistons. It also has aluminum roller-style 1.5:1 rocker arms, and includes the intake manifold and distributor installed. It has the carburetor, front-accessory drive kit, starter, fuel pump, alternator, air cleaner, and spark plug wires. Basically, it comes with just about everything needed to drop this powerful small block into your project car and get it fired up!

Motorsports inspired valve covers make this Chevy crate engine distinguishable at a glance. It also has bowtie insignias on the ends of the cylinder head, so there’s no mistake what’s powering your car. If you’d rather finish off the engine yourself, you can get the base engine at a lower cost.

You can check out the specifications for the engine here on the Chevy crate engine page. You can also score these crate engines through licensed dealers, such as Scoggin-Dickey Parts Center and Pace Performance.
