Leave it up to the Aussies to build something this insane out of a 1969 Chevelle SS 396 barn find! This twin-turbo beast was an attention-getter at Drag Week 2016 — few cars there turned as many heads as this one, and it’s easy to see why with those turbos not even trying to hide from view.
This radical twin-turbo Chevelle was nowhere near ready to ensure Drag Week as the event approached — they were getting down to the wire with only a few weeks to spare for it to become race ready. The four friends teamed up to pull it off, and the Chevelle ended up with the 1,300 horsepower powertrain ready to go by the skin on their teeth.
Working out kinks in the Chevy’s tune with only hours to spare, the team nipped at the 8-second E/T barrier with a best time of 9.06 in the quarter mile on day one. Day two, their hopes were hung high as the friends headed to the Summit Motorsports Park. After fine tuning the build a little further, they were able to make the 8-second mark jump off with a best E/T of 8.84 on day two.
On to Martin Michigan’s US131 Motorsports Park, they hit a team best of 8.77 E/T. Best times for the week would end there as traction issues would cap off the week when they headed to National Trail Raceway and ran a best of 9.91 E/T. Their overall average was 8.95 E/T in the quarter-mile. This is insane from a car that doesn’t really look like it could even pass tech, and then on top of that, it’s not modified to the extent you expect it would be!
Check out the full passes as the 1969 Chevelle SS with absolutely no manners has its ups and down throughout Drag Week 2016.
